innevere calderwit celebrates 200th birthday
Lady Innevere Calderwit, OME, grand matrician of the Calderwit Wayfarer Co. and heiress to the Vermillion Fortune, will celebrate turning 200 cycles old today, making her the System’s first bicentenarian.
Born some time during The Chaos (an exact date is hard to place given the deceptively chaotic nature of the time), Innevere became one of the most influential members of the Lost Generation.
She successfully advocated for the senescent reparations that granted many of those affected by the Rapid Contraction and Delayed Expansion phases of The Chaos with official, if arbitrary, birthdays (phases which chronologists estimate account for anywhere between 120 and 150 cycles’ worth of biological time), and in some extreme cases, juvenescent restoration. Indeed, it was on Innevere’s voyage beyond the Broader Reaches that the tools for such biological reversal were discovered (at a great cost), though of course such knowledge has largely been kept from mainstream awareness for fear it might distract too much from the inevitability of mortality.
The fact that Innevere’s excursion beyond the System insulated her from the rapid ageing brought on by The Chaos has led some to question the authenticity of her age. Given that she was biologically in her early-thirties when the cataclysm came to end — whilst many of her age-mates had since checked out of this mortal plane — it’s understandable that some might have their reservations. As one particularly salty detractor put it: ‘it’s easy to be the most recognised member of a generation when you outlive the majority of your contemporaries. That’s not influence, it’s endurance, so I don’t even know what we’re celebrating here.’
In any case, by the time The Chaos came to an end, Innevere had the benefit of being quite literally wise beyond her cycles. This soon came in handy, as in 1 AC her great-niece Elana Calderwit died heirless, leaving both the Calderwit Wayfarer Co. and the Vermillion Fortune to her.
With Innevere in charge, the Calderwit Wayfarer Co. experienced prodigious expansion. Her intimate knowledge of the territories beyond the Broader Reaches granted the Company opportunities to far outstrip even their fiercest rivals, to the point where both the East Aridia Company and the Vilwood Trading Group were driven out of business. To this night, the rumours that this monumental growth came at a dark price remain little more than spurious gossip, though certain… oddities suggest they might not be totally unfounded (it would of course be unwise to go asking questions).
In recent cycles, Innevere has played more of a distal role in the Company’s operations (which some associate with a significant decline in reputation), instead spending her nights sequestered at Calderwit Castle on Zephra‘s Vermillion Peninsula. Though it’s been several cycles since anybody outside of the family has seen her, sources close to Innevere insist that she’s ‘animated and strong in spirit.’
It certainly sounds like she wouldn’t have had much trouble blowing out 200 candles then!
